Valve Cover Gasket Sealant Or Not

I would use some red sealant (high temp) on the corners and half moon areas. I pulled the gaskets off and cleaned the surfaces on the heads and valve covers.

The valve cover is typically mounted to the cylinder head through a series of bolts and a rubber gasket.

Valve cover gasket sealant or not. As long as the gasket is brand new and/or in excellent condition, it will make a perfect seal. It simply is not necessary. Some ppl say you don't need it at all, i disagree.

A little sealant won't hurt in this case and will actually help seal it better. Depending upon the mileage of your car, the cover will most likely appear to be quite dirty. When i put the covers back on with new bmw gaskets, oil seeped out, a fair amount.

Our recommendation would be to seal your valve cover gasket leak either by replacing the gasket or using bluedevil oil stop leak as described in the article you read. That way you can remove the valve cover if/when you need to, and reuse the gasket. It also can be used (just a dab) at the ends of the pan gasket where the gasket meets the end corks.

You don’t need the high temp stuff. The side facing the valve cover i only covered the top surfaces not the sides. Use valve cover gasket glue to hold gasket in place so you can seat it properly.

The gaskets are molded rubber that sit in a channel in the head and the valve cover. Although neither type gasket should require any sealant, if your cover is warped or the surface of the cam box isn't smooth then you might find leaks.in which case i'd use a sealant with the gasket regardless of what it's made of. The rubber valve cover gasket doesn't require any rtv sealant.

Do not use that cork gasket. However, jhm and majority consensus seem to favor some amount of rtv as it will allow the seal to last longer although surface cleaning will be more difficult next time. I have read online everything from you should always use a sealant, to you should never use.

While on the phone the guy from eeuro stated i was supposed to use a gasket sealer around the half moons and on the corners on the valve cover but i didn't see that listed in the wis in the diy section here. I always put a dab of silicone over the rocker shaft plugs onto the aluminum on both sides. Remove the existing gasket and sealants that may stick to the cover or the top of the crankcase.

On the 390/429's valve covers i have installed many times over the years, i only use the thick cork & rubber gaskets and never use sealant. I took the covers off and flattened the mating surface of each valve cover using a precision granite slab,. I have never used a sealer on a rocker arm cover gasket.

I only put on a very small amount to help have an oil tight seal, and to make the gasket stay on the valve cover when i go to put it on. I use rtv on both sides of the gasket. As you can imagine, when a gasket starts to fail, it won’t be.

There are several valve cover gaskets available, the only one that does not need sealant imo is the victor reinz one. Disconnect any tubing that may still be connected and remove the cover carefully. That helps prevent any pieces from coming off and going someplace you do not want it to go.

Use some, you will be fine. When it comes to sealing an engine from oil leaks, the gasket is a vital component that prevents oil leaks, but it has not been given any recognition from most car owners. Remove the bolts securing the valve cover.

Each of the types of “ultra” sealants, identified by color, have specific characteristics for specific applications. The very thin coating of rtv sealant on both sides of the push rod cover gasket is a good was to prevent leaks due to the cover sheet metal being distorted. I have only heard it's not wise to use sealant on the oil filter housing gasket.

I've since bought a new set of cylinder head bolts, a new valve cover gasket (i know they say there reusalbe but it was free from eeuro). Even with this gasket though. There are lots of twists and turns in this cover though.

Search and you will find the torque values for the cylinder head. The permatex “ultra black” used to be my sealer of choice for valve cover gaskets and “ultra grey” for sealing any surfaces where the bolts are closely spaced, i.e. Although valve cover gaskets don't necessarily need sealers or cements, it's a common practice to glue the gasket to the valve cover.

Drop the cash on the rubber gasket, and use rtv ultra black sealant on the valve cover side of it. Rtv or not it will work. If your valve cover gasket is leaking oil it will drip down over the rest of your engine and can make it difficult to identify any other leaks, such as your oil pan gasket and timing cover gasket.

Also that sealant is designed more to replace gaskets, although that shouldn't have any detrimental effect with sealing things It’s responsible for sealing the oil within the valve cover so it won’t leak out of your engine. If the valve cover becomes loose or if the gasket material fails, the oil will begin to leak.

Do not glob it on if you put on way to much and it squishes out inside of the valve cover you could possibly block or clog an oil. It is instantly recognizable by the bead of red sealant already present on both sides of the gasket. Some engines do not use a gasket, but instead, they use silicone sealant.

I let it cure several hours (not cold here in s. In pulling off the valve covers i discovered two sets of gaskets on each side with gasket sealer. The only thing i'd suggest is that you smear a very thin layer of engine oil.

Give it two weeks.it will leak. The plastic valve covers will over time develop small, difficult to see unevenness (is that a word?) along the mating surface after yrs of heat exposure. The valve cover gasket is a seal that sits between the valve cover and your engine.

Valve cover leaks seem to be common on many engines so that might be the case. I've seen this multiple times. The main thing is to make sure the valve cover is straight.
